GAS

Graphics Animation System

Transparent Graph

source code available SOURCE CODE AVAILABLE

The Graphics Animation System, GAS, is a software package developed in support of the work of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) scientists at NASA Ames Research Center. The role of GAS in the CFD graphical analysis software cycle is to provide an easy-to-use menu-driven program providing fast, simple viewing capabilities as well as more complex rendering/animation features. It is used to display two- and three-dimensional objects along with computed data and to record animation sequences on video digital disk, videotape, and 16mm film. Some example applications have been pressure distribution inside the space shuttle main engine, vortex flows of the wing/strake surface of F-16 aircraft, and particle traces over the space shuttle orbiter.

The CFD software analysis cycle begins with the design of a test geometry "grid" and the execution of "flow solver" programs such as INS3D (COSMIC Program ARC-11794) on a supercomputer. These flow solver programs solve the higher order mathematical equations governing flight characteristics according to the test geometry grid specifications (e.g., forward swept wing model with surrounding airspace), and simulation conditions (e.g., angle of attack, Mach number, Reynolds number) provided as input. The numerical solution thus generated is collected and converted into graphical images of fluid flows, pressure distributions, shock waves and particle traces using the PLOT3D/AMES (ARC-12777 thru ARC-12789) graphics program. Then SURF (ARC-12381) Surface Shading Program is used to add shading/coloring enhancements to the images. Finally, using ARCGRAPH (COSMIC Program ARC-12350) device-independent standard graphical function calls and file formats as input, animation sequences are generated and recorded with GAS.

GAS is a menu driven program with viewing windows and mouse controls. It allows for viewing and rendering two- and three-dimensional objects including wire-frame or solid, hidden surface, shaded models. These objects can be scaled, rotated, translated, mirrored, colored, and combined with legends and text in animation sequences which can then be recorded on various hardware platforms.
GAS carries the NASA case number ARC-12976. It was originally released as part of the NASA COSMIC collection.
