MPICH is a freely available, portable implementation of MPI, the Standard for message-passing libraries. The current version of MPICH is 1.2.4 and was released on May 7, 2002.

Getting the MPICH Implementation

MPICH is freely available and is distributed as source.
  • The Unix (all flavors) version of MPICH
  • The Windows NT/2000 version of MPICH.
  • MPICH-G2, the Globus version of MPICH.

  • Porting MPICH to Other Systems

MPICH is designed to be relatively easy to port to other systems. Information on the design of MPICH is available here.

MPICH has been used as the basis of many MPI implementations. A page of links to other MPI implementations based on MPICH is available.

    ** IMPORTANT **

The ADI design, both the interface and the MPICH implementation of it, is changing. The new interface design allows lower latency and a simpler implementation; the new implementation design will allow for multiple devices (e.g., TCP and shared memory) as well as greater efficiency as well.

The current status of the ADI-3 design is now available. The design is still changing, but comments are welcome on the current plan.

    Additional Information

The book Using MPI, published by MIT Press, describes how to use MPI and makes use of some of the special features of this implementation.
