WHAT is a program similar in function to Unix “file” command implemented in Unisys macro-assembler to run on Unisys 2200-series mainframes under OW 2200, using Unisys standard command forms and data structures. WHAT examines a specified file or omnibus element and prints a description of its contents. If the data format is not recognized, an octal or text formatted dump is available to help the user recognize the data type. If one of a set of standard Unisys data types is recognized, the contents may be printed in an organized manner so that the content may be determined in addition to simply recognizing the data type. An optional dump of the file’s directory structure is available.
